Coverage & Protection.
Explained in Plain English.

Every move includes coverage — the question is which level fits what you're moving. Here's exactly what Basic Liability, Full Value Protection, and Item-Specific Coverage actually mean, in real terms, before you book.

MN DOT #385610 3 Coverage Options 0 Fine-Print Surprises Licensed & Insured

Your Three Options

Choose the Coverage
That Fits Your Move.

Every CPM move is covered by law under Basic Liability at no extra cost. Full Value Protection and Item-Specific Coverage are upgrades you can add depending on what you're moving and how much it's worth to you.

Whichever option you choose, it's spelled out in writing in your moving agreement before we lift a single box.

Basic Liability
Included
Automatically applied to every move
  • Included at no additional cost
  • Required minimum coverage under Minnesota law
  • Covers loss or damage by weight, not replacement value
  • Does not cover full replacement cost
⭐ Most Chosen
Full Value Protection
Priced by Value
Based on your declared total shipment value
  • We repair, replace, or reimburse at current cash value
  • Covers your entire shipment, item by item
  • Recommended for full-home moves
  • Cost scales with the total value you declare
Item-Specific Coverage
5%
of declared value, per item
  • Built for one or two high-value pieces
  • You declare a value; we cover that item at 5% of value
  • Ideal for pianos, art, antiques, safes
  • Can be combined with Basic Liability on the rest of the shipment

Option 01 · Included With Every Move

Basic Liability
(Released Value)

This is the coverage every licensed mover in Minnesota is required to carry, and it's automatically included on your CPM moving agreement — no forms to fill out, no extra line item. It's a good baseline, but it's important to understand what it actually pays out.

  • 01

Coverage Is Based on Weight, Not Value

If an item is lost or damaged, reimbursement is calculated by the weight of that specific item — not what you paid for it or what it's worth to you. A heavy but inexpensive item is covered more than a light but valuable one.

  • 02

    No Cost, No Paperwork

You don't pay anything extra and you don't need to declare a value. It's the default protection on every job we run.

  • 03

    Best For

Smaller moves, moves without high-value items, or moves where most items are easily replaceable at low cost — like a basic apartment move with standard furniture.

Included on every job. No cost. No forms.

— The CPM Default Standard
Good to Know

Weight-Based Reimbursement

Basic Liability is the industry floor, not the industry standard for peace of mind. Most clients moving a full household upgrade to Full Value Protection — ask your move coordinator which makes sense for your inventory.

Coverage Is a Choice.
Not a Guessing Game.

We walk through your options at booking so you choose with full information — not after something goes wrong.

Most Chosen

Full-Home Standard

For full household moves, Full Value Protection is what most CPM clients choose. It's the closest thing to true peace of mind for a whole-home relocation.

How Cost Works

Priced to Declared Value

You tell us the total value of your shipment; your Full Value Protection cost is calculated from that number. Higher declared value means higher coverage cost, but full repair-or-replace protection across everything you own.

Option 02 · Recommended for Full Moves

Full Value
Protection

This is real, comprehensive protection. If something is lost, damaged, or destroyed in the move, CPM is responsible for repairing it, replacing it with a like item, or reimbursing you at current market value.

  • 01

    Repair, Replace, or Reimburse

Minor damage gets repaired. A destroyed or lost item gets replaced with one of like kind and quality, or you're reimbursed at current cash value. You're not stuck with a payout that doesn't match reality.

  • 02

    Covers the Full Shipment

Unlike Item-Specific Coverage, this applies across everything on the truck — furniture, boxes, electronics, all of it — based on the total value you declare.

  • 03

    Best For

Full household moves, moves with a mix of valuable and everyday items, and anyone who wants to move without thinking twice about what happens if something goes wrong.

Option 03 · For Your Most Valuable Pieces

Item-Specific Coverage
at 5% of Declared Value

You don't need to insure your entire household at replacement value just to protect the one thing that actually keeps you up at night — a piano, a piece of art, an antique, a safe. Item-Specific Coverage lets you declare a value for that individual item and cover it at 5% of that value, while the rest of your shipment stays on Basic Liability or Full Value Protection.

🎹

Declare the Value

You and your move coordinator agree on a fair declared value for the specific item before move day — no guesswork after the fact.

💰

5% of Declared Value

Your coverage cost for that item is calculated as 5% of what you declared it's worth. A $2,000 item runs $100 in coverage.

Example: $100
🛡️

Stack It With Other Coverage

Item-Specific Coverage protects that one piece. The rest of your shipment is still covered by Basic Liability or Full Value Protection — whichever you've chosen.

🖼️

Built For

Pianos, fine art, antiques, safes, and other individually valuable items that don't need whole-shipment coverage to feel protected.

📋

In Writing, Every Time

The declared value and coverage terms for that item are documented in your moving agreement before we touch it.

✅

Easy to Add

Mention the item when you book. Your move coordinator will walk you through declaring a value and confirming coverage before move day.

Common Questions

Coverage Questions,
Answered Directly.

Still not sure which option fits your move? Here's what clients ask us most.

Do I have to choose additional coverage?+
No. Basic Liability is automatically included on every move at no extra cost. Full Value Protection and Item-Specific Coverage are optional upgrades you can add if you want more than the weight-based minimum.
What's the difference between Full Value and Item-Specific?+
Full Value Protection covers your entire shipment based on its total declared value. Item-Specific Coverage covers just one particular item — like a piano or a piece of art — at 5% of the value you declare for that item alone.
Can I combine Item-Specific Coverage with Basic Liability?+
Yes. That's exactly how most clients use it — Basic Liability covers the general shipment at no cost, and Item-Specific Coverage adds real protection for the one or two pieces that matter most.
How do I declare a value for an item?+
Just tell us about the item when you book or during your walkthrough. Your move coordinator will help you land on a fair declared value and get it documented in your moving agreement before move day.
What does Basic Liability actually pay out?+
Reimbursement is calculated by the weight of the specific item that was lost or damaged, not its purchase price or sentimental value. It's the Minnesota-required minimum, which is why most full-home movers choose to upgrade.
Is coverage the same as CPM's liability insurance?+
They're related but different. CPM carries its own business liability insurance as a licensed mover (MN DOT #385610). The coverage options on this page are about how your specific belongings are protected during the move itself.
When do we finalize which coverage I want?+
During booking or your pre-move walkthrough. Everything is documented in writing in your moving agreement before your crew arrives — no surprises added after the fact.
Can I change my coverage after booking?+
Yes, as long as it's finalized before move day. Give your move coordinator a call and we'll update your moving agreement to reflect the coverage you want.
